Mr. Urban was born in Minneapolis, MN. He moved to Portland, OR when he was 10, and has been in Oregon ever since. He began band in the 6th grade on euphonium, then switched to the tuba in 7th grade. In high school he continued with band and joined the high school's top choir. He performed in many honor ensembles on tuba (including WIBC and the All State Band) as well as participating in the state solo contest (placing 4th in the state in his junior year). During this time, he also began teaching private lessons. That is when he discovered his passion for teaching.
Mr. Urban was accepted at several great schools, including the Indiana Conservatory of Music, Marylhurst University, and the University of Oregon's School of Music, but he chose to attend Portland State University after high school. He studied philosophy, psychology, sociology, and music education, as well as performing in several professional groups during this time and attending multiple education conferences. He learned how to play and teach each instrument in the band as part of his undergraduate degree, mostly from Oregon Symphony players. He earned his bachelor's degree in music education after 6 years of study and his master's degree in education after one more year. He student taught in Gladstone at both the middle school and the high school before coming to teach at Vernonia as the music director for the district.
Mr. Urban has performed both instrumental and vocal music in 7 other countries around the world, and enjoys reading, fishing, swimming, water skiing, bowling, playing volleyball, and studying Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in his spare time.
